Hey everybody,

Last time I posted we we're going up north.
We visited Mecredy relatives up in Kerikeri who I'd never met before. Very very strange if somebody has your last name when you don't know them! But it was nice meeting some new relatives.

We then went up to Paihia and stayed there for a few days. It's a small town by the sea where lots of backpackers go. We went sea kayaking, visited the Waitangi treaty grounds (this treaty formed NZ as one nation in 1840) and the small town of Russell.

We also went on a day trip up to Cape Reinga, the most northern point of NZ and the place where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific come together. On the way up we drove on the 90-mile beach and went sand boarding in the sand dunes. Sand boarding was really cool, you lie on this board and just slide down the hill. But it was very hard getting up the hill, as it was rather high and sooo windy. I'm still finding sand from the sand boarding everywhere! On the way we also visited some kaori forests, the trees were absolutely enormous!

I’ve been wearing flip flops most of the time, so my feet are really tanned now… but they also itch a lot, sand flies are everywhere here, and they’ve been going for my feet.

When we'd seen all we wanted to see in the far north we went down to Whangarei to stay with Mijke’s relatives. They showed us around town and we saw some nice beaches and waterfalls.

We went into town by ourselves and walked past this camera. So I joked to Mijke "we're gonna be on TV now".
Later I got a message from my great aunt who we'd visited in Warkworth that she had seen us on the news! Apparently the camera was on. Haven't seen the film myself yet though..

Tomorrow we're off to Auckland. We'll look around for a few days and then get onto the magic bus and see where we get to. I've burned my photos onto a CD and did all my laundry (never knew how great it is to have clean clothes) so we're good to go now!

Thanks again for all the messages; it's great to hear how everybody is doing!

Ciao,
Laura
